Deirdre McSwiney will participate in a panel discussion in the Wellness Session and provide expert comment on sleep and mental health.
As a Sleep Technologist, Deirdre McSwiney honed her skills in the Sleep Laboratory in Dublin's Mater Private Hospital where all sleep disorders were diagnosed and treated there. Her special interest in the field of Insomnia took her to Glasgow where she trained in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) under Prof. Colin Espie. She is a member of the Irish and British Sleep Societies and gives regular talks to the Fibromyalgia Support group and the Chronic Pain Association.
Early in her career, Deirdre trained in Neurology in Adelaide Hospital and also in Kevin Street College of Technology obtaining a Diploma in Medical Physics and Physiological measurement. She then spent some time in London completing a 4 month placement in Great Ormond Street, Hammersmith General and Queen Square Hospital for Neurologiical Diseases. Over the next few years, she set up the first Cardiac Catherisation Laboratory at Mater Misericordae Hospital. She then went on to set up new EEG Department in Bon Secours hospital, Glasnevin, and a new Respiratory Function Laboratory and EEG/EMG Departments. She also set up new Sleep Laboratory Department in Mater Private Hospital.
